Why it gets ordered

The lateral is where most sewer problems start

Mainline gets the attention and the budget. The lateral is where roots get in, where the joint fails, and where the backup that reaches a tenant actually begins.

A lateral is also where responsibility gets argued about. A coded record of what is wrong and exactly where it is settles that faster than an opinion does.

Straight answer

A lateral needs a push camera, not the truck

The camera truck runs mainline from 6 to 72 inches. A 4 inch lateral needs a push camera, which is a different service and a different rate.

We also carry a transmitter that goes on the jetting nozzle, so we can locate a fault from the surface with a wand rather than guessing where to dig.

The InSight Standard

How a lateral line inspection runs

Clear the line, push the camera, locate the fault, code the record.

Jetter control panel and hose reel used to clear a lateral before inspection 01 · ACCESS

Through the cleanout

Most laterals are reached through a cleanout. Where there is not one, access is the first thing we work out.

Camera lit inside a pipe during inspection 02 · PUSH

Camera down the lateral

The push camera runs the length of the connection, recording as it goes.

Root intrusion at a lateral connection located during inspection 03 · LOCATE

Mark it on the surface

A transmitter and a locating wand put the fault on the ground above it, so the excavation happens in one place.

What that looks like on the day

  1. Scope before we roll. Size, footage, access and whether the line needs cleaning first. This is what stops a half day becoming two.
  2. Site walkthrough. Crew looks over access, traffic and overhead hazards, then holds a tailgate meeting before anything opens.
  3. Set up. Cones and signage placed, structures opened, equipment positioned.
  4. Clean if needed. A camera cannot read through debris, so anything in the way comes out first.
  5. Run the inspection. Observations recorded and coded live. You or your inspector are welcome to watch.
  6. Code and compile. Findings coded to the NASSCO standard, tied to footage markers, assembled with the video.
  7. Walk you through it. We go through what was found and what it means, rather than emailing a file and leaving.

Real captures

What a lateral line inspection finds

Real captures from inspection work.

Yellow gas line bored straight through a clay sewer pipe
A gas line through the sewer. Clearing this with a cutter without knowing would strike the gas main.
360 capture showing a defect at the pipe crown 113.7 feet into the run
A defect at 113.7 ft. Coded to its footage marker, so the repair digs in one place.
Debris and standing water in a brick manhole chamber
A structure full of debris. The camera cannot read through this, which is why cleaning comes first.

Before you ask for a price

What we need to quote a lateral line inspection accurately

Most requests arrive with a location and nothing else. That is fine, we will come back and ask. But if you have these, you get a real number instead of a range.

Send what you have
  • Job site location and access
  • Whether there is a cleanout
  • Lateral size if known
  • Roughly how long the run is
  • What the symptom is: backup, slow drain, or verification
  • Whether locating is needed
  • Whether the line needs clearing first
  • Approximate age of the line

Do not have all of it? Send what you do have. Missing items are usually one phone call, not a site visit.

The arithmetic

What guessing at a lateral costs you

Excavating to find a fault is the expensive way to locate it. Every foot of trench that turns out to be the wrong foot is paid for twice, once to open and once to close.

On a commercial site that trench is usually through a drive aisle, a parking area or a landscaped frontage, and the restoration costs more than the repair did.

Locating first turns a search into a single hole.

When to inspect a lateral

Repeat backups The same fixture or the same building backing up more than once
Before you dig Locate the fault instead of excavating the run to find it
Property transfer Establishing condition before responsibility changes hands
After a repair Confirming the work before the ground goes back
Roots suspected Mature trees near the run and a line that keeps slowing

Questions we get

Lateral line inspection, answered

What size lateral can you inspect?

4 to 6 inches with the push camera. Mainline from 6 to 72 inches is the camera truck, which is a separate service.

Can you tell me where the problem is from the surface?

Yes. We run a transmitter and use a locating wand to mark the fault on the ground above it, so the dig happens in one place.

What is LACP?

The NASSCO Lateral Assessment Certification Program. It is the coding standard for lateral condition, the same way PACP is for mainline.

Do you need a cleanout?

It is the usual access point. Where there is not one, access is the first thing we work out with you, and it may change the scope.

Will you repair what you find?

We offer QuickLock trenchless point repair for suitable defects. For anything beyond that we will tell you plainly what it needs.
